Now it might come as a surprise to some of you that I live in the country, have horses, build barns, the whole shebang. As such I often have to go and pick up horse feed, hay, tractor parts, building supplies, and plywood. Now you would think that a sane person such as myself would drive a truck, right? Nope, an 06' Mini Cooper.
One of my biggest complaints with trucks is that they don't handle well. I mean trucks are fun to drive sometimes because of the big v8 and the fact that driving one after driving a Mini is like going from driving a speedboat to a Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier. However for a daily driver I'd love something that combined the handling of a car with the practicality of a truck, an ute.
However what do we have in America if you need to haul stuff in open top bed but still want go handling characteristics?
El Camino and Ford Ranchero
Well first off we have the Elcamino and the Ford Ranchero, both of which are wonderful cars with the exception that most models of both are over 40 years old. However you have a big v8 on a car chassis and a bed for light hauling. However being someone that commutes a total of about a hundred miles a day, the reliability would be a huge issue and would thus be ultimately cut off. What's next on the list?
The subaru Brat
Lets get one thing straight, the Brat kicked ass. However with only having sixty-seven horse power I don't think that it would last too long on my several hour drives at eighty miles per hour.
The Subaru Baja
While technically a good car, I would prefer not to be blinded every time I had to look at my car.
The Dodge Ram SRT-10/Ford F150 Lightning/Chevy Silverado SS. In the amount I would have to pay in insurance, gas, and repairs I would be better off just buying an M3 and a cheap truck.
Also before I finish up I would just like to say that there are no new cars sold in North America that meet my qualifications. So GM or Ford, please bring an ute to North America? Please?

Ummmm.....the baja is badass. Just saying. Yes it came out the factory looking like a goob, but it has potential

Would the older cars really be unreliable? They aren't British roadsters and if you maintain them in sure they could be very reliable and much more simple to do work on

I am in the same situation sir. I live in northern Missouri in the land of snow. I really would like to have something 4wd like a truck but I just don't want a truck because it would have to be something big enough to haul a car and I simply don't want anything that big. I have tossed around so many vehicle combinations in my mind that I am going crazy. I just can't have 1 or 2 cars to do everything. I need about 6!

Legacy GT Wagon might fit your bill. I don't know if you are for real about buying one, but these things rock! Its a wagon so you get extra luggage room!
Plus they sound awesome!!!

Are there any decent aftermarket suspension setups for the late 60's/ early 70's El Camino or Ranchero? I've always wanted to have one for some of the same reasons but would never run a muscle car era car without modern suspension. - Because boring.
